Get a free car.

Sounds too good to be true, right?

I remember back in the heady days of the dotcom boom, you could just about get anything for free. Personal friends actually got free PCs in the mail, while others made thousands of dollars just browsing the web.

But a free car? How do they figure that?

Whenever anything is free, including those freebies found here on tihs website, you can bet there’s marketing involved. My friend’s free PCs were paid for by the advertisements that automatically appeared on their computers. I don’t remember the details of how those ads worked. These free-pc companies never stayed solvent for long.

I don’t know anyone who has a free car.

You may not know anyone personally who owns a free car, but you probably have seen one while driving around town, and not realized it. You probably thought that they were just cars owned by companies. They were probably the ugliest, gaudiest cars on the road, decorated to be a four wheeled version of a mobile phone, sneaker or coffee advertisement.

In actuality, these cars are owned by private individuals, who agree to drive the car around town for a certain amount of time each day. In exchange for the exposure, the advertiser provides you the car in all of its corporate glory for two years. All you need to do is pay for gasoline and car insurance.

Sounds great! How do I get started?

You get in contact with FreeCarMedia. They have an application which where you have to supply information including your home and “destination” address. Your destination address is most likely your office or school address, which helps FreeCarMedia evaluate whther your daily commute is suitable to their target demographic. After you fill out your application, you wait.

I already have a car, how can I get in on the action?

If you already have a car, you still can be sponsored, just like your favorite NASCAR drivers. You get your current car “wrapped.” The advertsising company will attach its advertising to your car and pay you a hefty fee of $400, which is more than enough to pay for your gas and insurance.
