Free information and directory services

I admit it. I have used 411 more than I need to, mainly because I’ve forgotten to write down an all-important phone number on a scrap of paper. There’s something weird that horrifies me when I write something down on a piece of paper. Something about making a permanent artifact of something I need only terribly. But tat’s my own terrible psychosis, and that’s neither here nor there.

The problem is of course, 411 is expensive. It’s at least $1 most places for the convenience, and it’s so easy to use, most people forget that it costs money. Until the end of the month, when it’s time to settle their accounts with the phone company. And even then, they are prone to forget the next time they need a phone number.

1-800-GOOG-411, 1-800-FREE-411, 1-800-555-TELL

These are two free services that will provide you the information you need. Just dial the number, and listen to an advertisement, and write down the phone number/information you need afterwards. GOOG-411 (from google, natch) actually connects you to your destination number. 555-TELL will actually give you stock quotes and weather forecasts too! For free.

Except of course your still using cell phone minutes.

Make sure you’re getting the right price

1-888-DO-FRUCALL will automatically look up the on-line price of a product for you. Just call the handy number, and enter in the UPC code for the item in question. The on-line price it gives you includes the cost to ship the item to your house too!
