Here are six things that anyone can do to save on your groceries.  There is no couponing involved, and you don’t need to change stores.  These rules are simple, easy to follow and guaranteed to save you money.

  1.  Shop the perimeter - Like casinos, supermarkets are designed to sell you things tha you don’t necesarily need.  You’ll find your fresh produce, dairy and baked goods around the perimeters of your local store.  These are the important things that you need to take care of yourself and your family.
  2. Supermarkets are for groceries - Buy only produce, meat, baked goods and dairy products at your grocery store.  Other things, including dry goods like pasta, toothpaste and baking supplies, are available for lower prices at big box stores like Walmart and Target.
  3. Make a shopping list - A well-written shopping list will protect you from the evils of impulse buying.  If you take the five minutes to write down exactly what you need before embarking on your shopping trip, you’ll save tons of money on the things that you didn’t buy.  The things that you’ve never needed to.
  4. Never shop on an empty stomach - A hungry stomach will make you crave things that you normally don’t want to eat.  Have a quick bite to eat before you go to the store to give your stomach a little satisfaction.  You want your brain to make the decisions in this case, and certainly not your stomach.
  5. Look up and down - Stores will put the most expensive things right at eye level, making them the first thing you see when buying something.  Look at the top and bottom of the shelves to find the best deals.
  6. Don’t take your children - Children are notorious for demanding things that they don’t need.  They are impulse buying personified.
