Save money while on vacation.

I like to travel. Probably more so than the next guy. Unsurprisingly, I also like to save money. These two desires are often at odds. When I travel, or do anything for entertainment reasons, I’m constantly weighing the cost of the activity against the amount of entertainment I’m receiving. If the entertainment side of the equation doesn’t equal or exceed the cost, I get frustrated.

It’s important for me to save money, even while relaxing.

Save money on accommodation, the most expensive part of your trip.

When you’re traveling, the most expensive thing is housing. For a plane ticket, you might be able to use your frequent flyer miles or a budget carrier like Southwest Airlines. The airlines are almost always waging some sort of price war, thereby lowering prices for your convenience. There aren’t many ways for you to save money on accommodation.

And you’re definitely going to need a place to stay.

CouchSurfing - Stay for free all around the world

CouchSurfing was founded to enable people to travel around the world and make friends. Couchsurfing divides the world up into two types of people: hosts and surfers. As the site says: “CouchSurfing seeks to internationally network people and places, create educational exchanges, raise collective consciousness, spread tolerance and facilitate cultural understanding. We open our minds and welcome the knowledge that cultural exchange makes available. “

A host is someone who has a spare bed, couch or floor for people to stay at. Hosts are normally outgoing people who are interested in meeting people from all around the world. A surfer is someone who is visiting that city and is borrowing that aforementioned bed, couch or floor for a short period of time. Hosts don’t ask for anything except that the surfer be polite.

In other words, a host is like your long lost cousin Amy. You and Amy have never met, but you’re willing to spend some time to get to know her, and she’s willing to do the same. You’ve never met her before. Never seen her before except for some photos, and you’ve decided that you want to visit the city where she lives. She just happens to have a spare couch, and is cool with you staying there, as long as you’re polite and don’t make a mess.

Membership is free, like the couchsurfing itself is free. Just visit the website, register for an account, and start traveling.

Be sure to say “Hi” to Amy for me.
